I often get a feature together with a list of the different tasks that goes along with that feature from a client or product manager.

Previously we've been using Trello for keeping track of features and using their checklists for individual tasks. Trello is very nice tool but it is a bit lacking for keeping track of a backlog and time spent.

So what I think would be great is that if after I've created my main feature I could enter a create many subtasks mode, which basically looks like the normal create issue. And as I've finished entering one issue I can directly continue on with another subtask without submitting it. As such not having to go back to the create new issue page directly.

My personal ideal view of it would be a new issue has been created and inside the description body I have a list, hovering the list I get a button to create subtasks from list items. A new page is displayed that looks just like the normal create issue page, but each issue in that list as separate issues using the display we already know.

Example:

A quick way of creating several subtasks

To save time and convince new users that YouTrack has many benefits compared to the old systems they've used a way of creating several new subtasks should be devised.

Proposed solution 1:
  • On the create new issue page add it so it is possible to create several new issues after each other
  • Make it possible to move between these issues so the command box will work for assigning, etc, easily

Proposed solution 2:
In the description body of an issue make each list that is shown have a button available(on hover) that will allow the user to create a set of subtasks from that list. After the the user has chosen a list the items will be displayed in a list so the user can perform commands on the (to be) newly created subtasks
  • Convert a list in the description body to subtasks from the click of a button
  • The content of the list item should be set as the Summary of the new subtask
  • Show only the (to be) newly created subtasks so commands can be run on them
