It would be nice if YouTrack had more colors to choose from for my field values.
How about having three separate groups, with a bit of visual space between them. The first group could have white text on dark shades. The second black text on light shades. The third would have several different text colors on transparent backgrounds.
This third group is particularly under-represented in the current design: there is only "normal on transparent" and "green on transparent".
